Winter Sports at Breakthrough are in full swing.
Girls' Lady Royals have played three games and they currently have a 2 and 1 record. The girls are improving steadily and the athletes are really coming together as a team.
Boys' Breakthrough Royals are also involved in their season. They are currently 0 and 3, however, many players are new to the team and they are also improving steadily. Many of the athletes on the team have said that despite their current record, the games are a lot of fun and they are happy to be on the team and to play.
Sportsmanship is evident at the games and our athletes are setting a high standard for "classy competition".
Check the schedule below and plan to attend a home game to cheer for our teams!

Happy New Year 2013!
Now that the holidays are behind us, Breakthrough Magnet Middle School is busy with many activities. Eighth graders enjoyed a trip to Cheney Technical High School where they spent the day observing classes, speaking with the Guidance Department and meeting teachers in the various shops offered at this very exciting high school.
Breakthrough Magnet Students are able to visit high schools, attend open house events and even shadow students currently enrolled in area schools. It is a great opportunity to participate and it helps our students to apply to schools that best fit their needs.

October
October Lesson in the Library
Wonder by: R.J. Palacio
Students are reading and listening to this amazing story.
August (Auggie) Pullman was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school - until now. He's about to enter fifth grade at Beecher Prep, and if you've ever been the new kid, then you know how hard that can be. the thing is Auggie's just an ordinary kid, with an extraordinary face. But can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, despite appearances?
We are exploring the concepts of bullying and also, is beauty really only skin deep. The theme of the book is courage and each character faced with situations that require courage to see them through.
Movie Night
Movie Night was a big success. 36 students stayed on a very rainy afternoon to watch The Sandlot. The movie was funny and it gave the kids a glimpse into what life was like for middle school kids in the 1950's. I had to explain that the circular ring with finger holes in it was "the phone". Also, that moms wore really pretty dresses all the time even at home!
The kids helped set up our pizza and ice cream supper. We moved tables into the foyer and created a middle school cafe'.
Thanks to all of the kids for being helpful and so much fun to be with.
